As writer-directors they turned out about the same number of terrific movies. $35 Reviewed by Charles Matthews, editor of West, the Sunday magazine of the San Jose Mercury-News, and author of "Oscar: A to Z." Is Billy Wilder really, as Ed Sikov categorically asserts, "the greatest writer-director in American film history"? Greater than Charlie Chaplin or Orson Welles? Or my personal favorite, Preston Sturges, whose blithe satire on Hollywood, "Sullivan's Travels," is at least as successful as Wilder's bitter one, "Sunset Boulevard"? And then there's Wilder's near-contemporary, John Huston.
